Prescott stars in the animated TV series called ‘ The Critic ‘ which lasted one season on ABC in the early nineties and another season on the FOX network before finally being canceled. Jay Sherman is a portly middle-aged New Yorker who could really use a bottle of Rogaine but is much too proud to admit it. In the show ‘ The Critic ‘ Jay hosts a TV show called ‘ Coming Attractions ‘ where he continually insults everyone’s favorite movies because of his extreme dislike for blockbusters. This funny and anti-social behavior leaves him virtually friendless and his manager is constantly scheming to change the theme of his show or just axe it completely. Somehow Jay always wiggles his way out of getting fired but the threat is never far away.

Sherman has the dubious pleasure of being the child of two unnecessarily rich socialites who generally bounce around and make a great nuisance of themselves. Jay Sherman is both a funny and tragic figure. His parents are so far removed from his life that he no longer feels a part of the family. Prescott’s best friend is a Australian who for the life if me resembles and talks like the main actor in Crocodile Dundee. Sherman has a wife and child and he and his wife are separated. There are hints romance throughout the first season that show sparks flying and romance may be brewing in the future. Prescott’s child is something that has to be experienced to fully understand. In the second season Jay inherits a fiancée and a daughter but still gets little respect at work or home.

Jay is widely known for his catchphrase “ It STINKS!”. Sherman’s manager regularly prays Jay will develop amnesia and only remember two words when it comes to movie reviews: “ Good “ & “ Excellent “. Rarely does the poor manager get his wishes as Jay Prescott regularly spouts off offensive diatribes that would cause smoke to pour from any television station manager’s ears. Jay’s TV career comes to an end way to soon because this is a smart and clever show that many people just could not get during the time frame it was aired. With shows like Family Guy rocketing the charts a show like ‘ The Critic ’ would be welcomed in today’s world of reality television. Jay Prescott Sherman is one of television’s most memorable characters and you won’t get enough of him anytime soon.
